In
November 2024, the high-pressure area from China periodically extended its
ridge to cover upper Thailand and the South China Sea, causing cool weather in
the northern and northeastern regions almost the whole month, especially at the
end of the month when the rather intense high-pressure area extended down to the
upper southern region which brought generally cool weather in upper Thailand
with cold weather in many areas of the northeastern region. However, the
high-pressure was weak at times, and temperature rose in several places. For
rainfall, due to the passage of the westerly trough over the upper northern
region on November 7 and 8 in the beginning and the middle of the month and the
prevailing of the easterly and southeasterly winds over the lower northeastern,
eastern, central and the upper southern regions in the middle of the month,
unseasonable rain was observed in upper Thailand at that time. In southern region,
under the influence of the monsoon trough that lay across the southern region at
the beginning of the month, the northeast monsoon dominated the Gulf of
Thailand and the southern region for almost the whole month, becoming stronger
at the end of the month. Additionally, the low-pressure cell covered the
eastern coast of Malaysia, the Strait of Malacca and the Malay Peninsula at the
end of the month. These resulted in an abundance of rain in southern region at
the beginning and the end of the month. In particular, the consecutive
torrential rains at the end of the month caused significant flooding in many
areas of the east coast. In November 2024, Thailand received an average total
rainfall that was 57% higher than normal. The average temperature in Thailand
was 0.9°C warmer than normal. Monthly rainfall was lower than normal in most regions
i.e. northern region 1.9 mm (7%), northeastern region 13.0 mm (71%), eastern region
6.7 mm (14%) and southern region (west coast) 21.0 mm (11%). In contrast, the southern
region (east coast) received 386.1 mm (113%) and the central received 3.1 mm (10%)
higher than normal.
