In
January 2026, Thailand experienced cool weather in general almost the entire
month. The average temperature was below normal in almost regions, with the
average temperature for the whole country of 0.6°C below normal. This was due
to the influence of the high-pressure area from China periodically extended its
ridge to cover upper Thailand almost the whole month in addition with the
northeast monsoon prevailed over the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and
the Andaman Sea. Subsequently, generally cool to cold weather was found in
Thailand, especially during 8–12 January when the rather active high-pressure area
extended its ridge to cover upper Thailand and the upper southern region,
causing temperatures to decrease with successive cold weather in the northern
and the northeastern regions, with very cold weather in some areas in those
regions. The mountainous areas and mountaintops also experienced cold to very
cold weather with frost occurring in some places. For rainfall, less rainfall
was found in upper Thailand, with scanty rainfall in the central and eastern
regions for few days. In the southern region, rainfall was observed along the
eastern coast due to the influence of the northeast monsoon prevailing over the
Gulf of Thailand, southern Thailand, and the Andaman Sea. Overall, Thailand
experienced below-normal rainfall in all regions. The average total rainfall
over Thailand in this month was 80% lower than normal, i.e., the northern part
10.6 mm (100%), the northeastern part 6.7 mm (100%), the central part 8.5 mm (79%),
the eastern part 18.4 mm (80%), the southern part (east coast) 82.0 mm (78%) and
